Opening the bridge

The Millennium footbridge connecting Newcastle and Gateshead quaysides.  It's not like the one in London, which wobbles - this is much more spectacular.  The whole footbridge rises up on cables to allow shipping to pass underneath.  On this day a small French navy ship was joining its comrade on the quayside.

The Bridge beginning to lift up to let a ship through.
A big crowd was watching from the glass viewing box in the left...
... and also from outside the Baltic opposite.

Here's the ship passing under the raised bridge.

Then it begins to lower again.

The Bridge is almost ready for pedestrians again. From the Tyne bridge this process  supposedly looks like a giant blinking eye.
Bridge ready for pedestrians again
I don't know about that, but it was still really good.  Took about fifteen minutes.
