November 2004

The end of November so naturally I booked a few days' holiday in one of the wettest parts of the country - Cumbria.  But it had been years since I visited the Lakes, so the time was now.

B&B

Derwentwater

A trip to the Lakes, staying in a nice but peculiar B&B.  This was the view from the breakfast room.

Derwentwater.   Gliding across the icy waters at ... unbelievably.... about four pm. We had the boat to ourselves.

Crummock water

Ullswater

There was the odd hint of sun that week, and every time it appeared we had to stop the car so I could take a photo.  This is Crummockwater, travelling towards ....

.... Ullswater.  My word, that was a bleak place.

Buttermere

honister pass

Buttermere.  We saw the pub, walked to the edge of the lake, and ... decided that was enough outdoors for one day.

So all I had to do then was drive back. This is Honister pass.  It was windy and very isolated.  It suddenly struck me that I had no food, no water, no torch and no blankets in the car.

landing stage

on the boat

Keswick landing stage.  It's mid afternoon.

Same trip, about half an hour later.  Weather not as bad as it first seemed.

surprise view

This is Surprise View, above - way above - Derwentwater.

Fantastic view from here.  We walked all the way from the car park.  Drove back down, scattering walkers.  The benefit of visiting the lakes in winter is that you can see so much.  Of course, the downside is that your hands freeze to your camera while you're looking.

Whinlatter Forest

Whinlatter Forest.  Actual snowy peaks.  The layby was full of people parked up and taking photos, glad they had brought the car.

Whinlatter Forest The peak again.
